Matthew Perry

Perry enjoyed a dramatic rise to fame in the ’90s as he starred as Chandler in Friends. Everything seemed perfect in his life but the reality was very different. In his memoir, he revealed that he went to rehab 15 times and attended thousands of AA meetings. Oxycodin almost killed him when his colon burst.

He also admitted that he faked pain at one rehab in Switzerland to receive ketamine and morphine shots. Furthermore, Perry explained that he had noticeable weight fluctuations during Friends because of his drug use. It seems like an endless battle for the star (via Variety).

Nicole Kidman and Urban have one of Hollywood’s strongest relationships. But it almost ended after a few months because of Urban’s substance abuse problems. The Australian country star is almost 15 years sober but it could have come at a severe personal cost.

Urban explained that his wife almost walked away (via Today). He said: “I’m just so glad she didn’t, and she made a decision to turn around and initiate ultimately this intervention and it was done in such a way that the love in that room at that moment was just right. I was like, ‘Put the cuffs on, let’s go.'”

We couldn’t write this list without including Spears because she’s one of the most well-known celebrities who was in and out of rehab facilities. She notoriously checked herself into rehab after shaving her head in 2007. The pop icon went in and out like a train entering a tunnel. In 2007, her assistant quit because she couldn’t do her job properly.

Those two years were the worst of her career and her fans feared for her long-term health. Britney is a global superstar and most people wished the best for her. She’s an example of what happens when vulnerable celebrities suffer exploitation (via ABC).

Sheen is one of Hollywood’s most notorious bad boys. We could mock him but the reality is that his addictive personality ruined his life. Sex and controlled substances wreaked havoc on him and that’s why he’s been to rehab many times. His first visit was in 1990 but there have been many since (via Mirror).

Alcohol and drug abuse caused him to behave erratically and even violently toward his partners. Furthermore, he had a serious relapse in 2015 when he revealed that he was HIV positive. Many people sympathized with him but it also forced Sheen to say that he never knowingly transmitted the disease.

Gomez went to rehab for a different reason than most of the people on this list. She endured mental health problems after her lupus diagnosis. The former Disney star underwent chemotherapy before she went to Meadows in Arizona (via Page Six).

But Gomez also dealt with accusations that she was a drug addict or alcoholic. She reacted angrily to this because she didn’t appreciate the media’s attempt to damage her reputation. It was also wrong to stigmatize these issues when many people deal with them every day.

This shows that patients, famous or not, must enter with an open mind and want to become better.
