Celebs Who Are Constantly In and Out of Rehab

Darren September 14, 2023

Many ‘regular’ people think that celebrities have amazing lives that are completely stress-free. But this simply isn’t true as they lead incredibly demanding lives that lead to many of them having substance abuse problems. Bad influences can also surround them at every turn to take advantage of them. These and many other factors all add up and explain why so many A-listers go to rehab.

Over time we’ve seen tons of celebs drifting in and out of rehab with varying results of success. Some of them relapse several times and can’t stay clean over the long haul. Fortunately, however, there are actually some happy stories too as some stars overcame their adversity. But at the end of the day, there’s no denying that drugs and alcohol will also cast a paul on Hollywood. Check out our list of celebs who were in and out of rehab now.

Rolling Stone

Demi Lovato

Former Disney star and hit musician Lovato has been in and out of rehab since she reached adulthood. Sadly, Lovato has several conditions that affect her quality of life including bulimia and bipolar disorder. This made her vulnerable to bullying as well as self-harm (via Page Six).

Lovato has been to several rehabs but her preference seems to be facilities in Utah. She went there in 2022 because she no longer wanted to be ‘California sober.’ The singer decided to cut marijuana and alcohol out of her life because it wasn’t helping her reach her goal of staying sober. She knew the risks because they had a traumatic overdose in 2018.

Vanity Fair

Colin Farrell

There was a time when Farrell was one of Hollywood’s most notorious bad boys. The Irishman was a heavy drinker and consumed drugs like a child in a candy shop. But he did the bravest thing he could and acknowledged his problem. Farrell checked into a rehab facility and began mindfulness therapy.

He later opened up about the experience. “I’d gotten out of control. For years I could indulge in certain things,” Farrell told David Letterman (via Landmark Recovery). “I had quite a high tolerance for various drugs for years, I thought. It accumulated to the point where I couldn’t put my foot on the brake anymore.” Clearly, he needed help, so it’s good he did what was the best thing for his career and life.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Like Farrell above, there was a time when Zeta-Jones was one of Hollywood’s hottest stars. The Welsh actress starred in The Mask of Zorro, Wednesday, and many other franchises. However, her bipolar disorder affected her quality of life. From 2011 she was in and out of rehab as she dealt with her struggles.

Remember, this was around the time that her husband, Michael Douglas, was also struggling with tongue cancer. This placed a lot of stress on Zeta-Jones too because she cared about her husband. In the end, it was too much for her to handle by herself but she confronted her demons (via The Guardian).

His fans think that because Eminem is one of the greatest rappers of all time, he has a perfect life. But the reality is that he’s human too and has experienced horrific adversity in his life. He went through valium addiction and was gobbling 20 pills per day before he went to rehab (via KCRA).

Hip Hop

Furthermore, he ballooned up in weight and this also affected his mental health. Eminem also suffered a methadone overdose after his friend’s death. He knew that drugs would kill him if he didn’t get clean. The legendary Elton John helped him through his second trauma. Overall, it appears the rehab helped as he maintains a strong presence in the music world long after storming onto the scene in the late 1990s.

Drew Barrymore

Many people think that child actors live the dream but the reality is that they are under a ton of pressure so many succumb to drug addiction and depression. Unfortunately, that’s what Barrymore experienced when she developed a drinking problem at the tender age of 11. She also became dependent on cocaine the following year.

Barrymore went to rehab after a suicide attempt and improved her life. But she had a relapse in 2016 after a messy divorce from Will Kopelman. She began drinking heavily again and fell into a dark place. Happily, she went to rehab again and confronted her demons (via Harper’s Bazaar).

Affleck is very open about his battles with sobriety over the years. The Gone Girl star is one of the most famous actors of his generation. But it’s not always happy sailing for the Hollywood legend. In 2001, he went to rehab for the first time in Malibu after he acknowledged his drinking problem.

But he’s been in and out of rehab since then after he partied too much. In 2017, he returned to a treatment center because he went to an unhealthy place. Affleck also says that he’s not ashamed of his problems and feels the important thing is to admit they’re there (via Us Magazine).

Miley Cyrus

These days, Cyrus is one of the most popular pop stars on the planet. But fame can be a heavy burden as she discovered the hard way. The former Hannah Montana star says that her family has a history of alcohol abuse. Unfortunately, this affected her too but she has since cut it out of her life.

She also quit using cannabis after it damaged her vocal cords. After one relapse in 2020, she explained her healing process. Cyrus said (via Elle): “One of the things I’ve used is: “Don’t get furious, get curious”. So don’t be mad at yourself, but ask yourself, “What happened?”‘

Russell Brand

Heroin is one of the most notorious and dangerous drugs in the world. Everybody who uses it agrees that the first time is an incredible and an almost indescribable high. They then spend eternity trying to find it again but it’s not possible. English comedian and actor Brand developed an addiction to the substance in 2002.

Finally, he agreed to go to rehab and confront his demons. He also attended AA to overcome his alcohol dependency. Brand knew that his rockstar lifestyle wasn’t conducive to a long life. Now the polarising star helps other drug addicts through his sponsorship program (via People).

Demi Moore

Moore has spent more time in and out of rehab than most of the people on this list. She had pill, alcohol, and drug dependencies throughout her life. Sadly, her family has a long history of substance abuse and this affected her. Her relationship with actor Ashton Kutcher also caused her to relapse.

This is because he reportedly didn’t take her alcoholism seriously. He allegedly said that he didn’t know if it was a real thing and suggested everything was fine in moderation. Moore fell into another cataclysm but luckily recovered before it was too late (via Cosmopolitan).

Zac Efron

Efron has been one of Hollywood’s biggest heartthrobs for almost a decade. We might think life is perfect for him but that’s not always been the case. In 2013, he went to rehab for drug and alcohol addiction. One infamous incident saw him have a confrontation with a homeless man.

“I was drinking a lot, way too much,” Efron told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s never one specific thing. I mean, you’re in your 20s, single, going through life in Hollywood, you know? Everything is thrown at you.” Now he’s sober after cutting out substances from his life.

Kirsten Dunst

The Spiderman actress was one of the biggest stars of the 2000s. Who can forget that iconic upside-down kiss with Toby Maguire in the hit superhero franchise? Meanwhile, she also had success in Marie Antoinette and Jumanji. However, she went to every celebrity’s favorite rehab, the Cirque Lodge in Utah.

Vanity Fair

Dunst cited the unrealistic expectations that people put on actors as the reason why she went there. She battled against depression and said that she felt unbelievably angry at the time. These days she is happier with a low-key life and a happy marriage to Jesse Plemons (via Marie Claire).

Kit Harington

Harington soared to global fame as Jon Snow on the TV phenomenon Game of Thrones. He instantly became one of the most desirable men on the planet. But the celebrity lifestyle took its toll on the brooding hero. He secretly checked into rehab ahead of the show’s finale.

One of the most shocking aspects of Sia’s rise to fame was that nobody knew what she looked like. The Australian pop star famously hid her face when her career exploded. But this came with a cost because Sia had a serious alcohol problem that threatened her life.

Sia said that she was suicidal and credited actress Kathy Griffin with saving her life. Griffin reportedly convinced Sia to seek help and she went to rehab. In the end, she became sober and ended her toxic relationship with alcohol. She was lucky because many people don’t get a second chance (via Variety).

Cara Delevinge

Delevinge went to rehab in 2022 after substance abuse took control of her life. Her mental health was in a terrible place and her loved ones thought that she was out of control. Finally, the model’s girlfriend, British popstar Minke, convinced her to seek out professional help.

“That’s the problem. If you’re not face-first on the floor and ready to get up again, you won’t. At that point, I was,” Delevingne said (via Grazia Magazine) “All I knew is if I was continuing to go down the road I was, I would either end up dead or, like, doing something really, really stupid.”

The Wrap

Dominic Fike

Euphoria turned Fike into a global star but he was already enjoying a career as a singer-songwriter. Fans loved his romantic relationship with his co-star Hunter Schafer. But it shocked them when they learned that he was high throughout the filming process (via BuzzFeed).

He was already a drug addict and spent time in rehab before his new job. But being on a TV show about drug use didn’t help his mental state. Fike revealed that showrunners almost gave him the boot but in the end, he stuck around. Now he’s sober again and says he’s in a happier place.

Elton John

This legendary British pop star once notoriously bought a steam engine when he was high on cocaine. It’s fair to say that he had a dubious relationship with the drug. He spent 16 years abusing cocaine and other substances before cleaning his act up for 30 years (via The Guardian).

NY Post

Rehab played a big role in his recovery. However, he says that he also recognized his vulnerability. John said: “I still dream, twice a week at least, that I’ve taken cocaine and I have it up my nose. And it’s very vivid and it’s very upsetting, but at least it’s a wake-up call.”

Natasha Lyonne

Lyonne has enjoyed a career revival over the past few years. Her performances in Russian Doll and Poker Face earned her critical acclaim. However, it hasn’t been plain sailing for the former American Pie star because battled heroin addiction (via EW).

Eva Mendez

Mendez also enjoyed Cirque Lodge’s hospitality in Utah after she fell into alcoholism. This shocked her fans because Mendez didn’t show any public signs of a problem. However, this is a common situation for many people who are dealing with this kind of struggle.

New York Post

The actress said that her suffering wasn’t any less serious because she didn’t have a public meltdown. She also emphasized the importance of taking celebrity suffering seriously. So many actors and pop stars had overdoses because nobody cared about them (via Huffington Post).

Matthew Perry

Perry enjoyed a dramatic rise to fame in the ’90s as he starred as Chandler in Friends. Everything seemed perfect in his life but the reality was very different. In his memoir, he revealed that he went to rehab 15 times and attended thousands of AA meetings. Oxycodin almost killed him when his colon burst.

He also admitted that he faked pain at one rehab in Switzerland to receive ketamine and morphine shots. Furthermore, Perry explained that he had noticeable weight fluctuations during Friends because of his drug use. It seems like an endless battle for the star (via Variety).

Star Tribune

Keith Urban

Nicole Kidman and Urban have one of Hollywood’s strongest relationships. But it almost ended after a few months because of Urban’s substance abuse problems. The Australian country star is almost 15 years sober but it could have come at a severe personal cost.

Taste of Country

Urban explained that his wife almost walked away (via Today). He said: “I’m just so glad she didn’t, and she made a decision to turn around and initiate ultimately this intervention and it was done in such a way that the love in that room at that moment was just right. I was like, ‘Put the cuffs on, let’s go.'”

Britney Spears

We couldn’t write this list without including Spears because she’s one of the most well-known celebrities who was in and out of rehab facilities. She notoriously checked herself into rehab after shaving her head in 2007. The pop icon went in and out like a train entering a tunnel. In 2007, her assistant quit because she couldn’t do her job properly.

Those two years were the worst of her career and her fans feared for her long-term health. Britney is a global superstar and most people wished the best for her. She’s an example of what happens when vulnerable celebrities suffer exploitation (via ABC).

Page Six

Charlie Sheen

Sheen is one of Hollywood’s most notorious bad boys. We could mock him but the reality is that his addictive personality ruined his life. Sex and controlled substances wreaked havoc on him and that’s why he’s been to rehab many times. His first visit was in 1990 but there have been many since (via Mirror).

Alcohol and drug abuse caused him to behave erratically and even violently toward his partners. Furthermore, he had a serious relapse in 2015 when he revealed that he was HIV positive. Many people sympathized with him but it also forced Sheen to say that he never knowingly transmitted the disease.

Selena Gomez

Gomez went to rehab for a different reason than most of the people on this list. She endured mental health problems after her lupus diagnosis. The former Disney star underwent chemotherapy before she went to Meadows in Arizona (via Page Six).

But Gomez also dealt with accusations that she was a drug addict or alcoholic. She reacted angrily to this because she didn’t appreciate the media’s attempt to damage her reputation. It was also wrong to stigmatize these issues when many people deal with them every day.

Robert Downey Jr.

These days, Downey Jr. is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and a box office giant. But this wasn’t always the case because he spent time in and out of rehab and jail. He had a bad upbringing because his father introduced him to drugs when he was just six years old (via Decider).

This unsurprisingly had a terrible impact on his life. He became one of Hollywood’s bad boys before he made the brave decision to turn sober. This changed his career because it also made it easier for production companies to insure him. The stability helped him become the legend that he is now.

Lindsay Lohan

Lohan once told Oprah Winfrey that she used cocaine 10 to 15 times per day. It’s no wonder that she’s been to rehab more than almost everybody else on this list. She’s received multiple court orders and also checked herself into different facilities to deal with her addiction.

However, Lohan proved that rehab isn’t a miracle cure. She rejected it several times because she thought it was a waste of time. This shows that patients, famous or not, must enter with an open mind and want to become better. Everyone knows about Lohan’s harrowing struggles with substance abuse and her attempt to make it back to stardom (via Daily Beast).
