Social Media Users Call Out The Weirdest Things We Think Are Normal

Monica April 5, 2024

Some things in day-to-day life have become so normalized that we don’t even think twice about them anymore. But if you take a moment to stop and think about the absurdity of some everyday things that just don’t make sense, your eyes begin to open up a bit. So these people on the internet called out the most ridiculous but still true scenarios on social media.

Take one look and you’ll notice just how bizarre they are. These so-called ‘normal’ everyday things include our strange holiday traditions, getting a university degree, or waking up to a blaring, horrible alarm sound. Find out why these things just shouldn’t be normal right here.

Skipping Questions

When we get into an argument with someone, we often try to take some space and come back to the argument at a later time. This is so we can take a breather and come back, usually calmer and more understanding. But there are other real-life scenarios where we take space and come back to something at a later time. This Twitter user pointed out an example of when we skip test questions and come back to them at a later time. For some reason, we think we’re going to know more 20 minutes later than we did when we first read the test question. Even though it’s one of the weirdest tactics we have during an exam, we’ve all done it before (via Twitter).

Are You Okay?

Whenever we ride in an airplane, most of us opt for the window or aisle seat. No one chooses the middle seat unless they’re assigned that seat. Who would want to sit in between two strangers for an extended amount of time? You don’t have a view and you can’t freely get out of the row of seats. But this person shared their experience on an airplane when they offered the aisle seat to a guy in the middle seat so he could sit next to his partner. Instead of accepting, he declined and admitted he’d rather sit in between them for the flight. He has to deal with them talking over him and might even have to fight over the armrest. And now, he’s known on social media for simply being weird (via PupABC).

Reminder – You’re Disappointing Your Family

Do you have a photograph of your family in your office cubicle? Most people do, and while we’d like to believe we have a photograph to remind us of their smiling faces and help get us through the day, the photograph also serves as a subtle reminder that those are the people we’re disappointing every single day. This social media Tweet hit a little bit too close to home, but at least it’s there to remind us to work harder (via Twitter).

Twitter

Set The Bar Low

If you’re a younger sibling, you’ll fully understand what it’s like to have to follow in your older siblings’ shoes. Sometimes, it feels like you’ll never be as successful as they were, but other times, they set the bar so low that there’s no competition at all. This social media Tweet reminds us that most of us are failures who set the bar low for our younger siblings. It’s high time that they thank us (via Twitter)

Fake It Until You Make It

We’ve all lied on our resume, whether it was about our tasks at our previous jobs or the length of time we spent working somewhere. It’s become a common thing to lie on your resume in an effort to be the best applicant possible. But when the job asks why you want to work at that company, most of us tell our biggest lie. The job is usually looking for specific reasons like wanting to work with their staff or believing in the same values and goals. But the truth is, most of us want to work somewhere because we’re running out of money and don’t want to starve. Even though this Reddit post shared our dirty secret, at least our employers won’t believe we’re the ones needing a job solely to eat (via DasEvoli).

Twitter

Strange Holiday Traditions

Most of us don’t think twice about our holiday traditions, especially when they’ve been in the family for years. But the weirdest holiday tradition of them all is our good old Christmas Tree. This social media post pointed it out and now we can’t unsee it. For Christmas, we kill a tree, put it up in our house, decorate it, drink egg nog, and celebrate a nonexistent bearded man dressed in red. We’ll keep celebrating the holidays, though we’re not sure if we’ll ever think of them the same way again (via Twitter).

More Single Than Ever Before

If you didn’t feel single before reading this social media post, you’ll certainly feel single now. This Valentine’s Day plan starts with a cute list, which tricks us into thinking it’s for two people. But once you finish the list, you’ll realize this Valentine’s Day plan was specifically for one person. You might even recognize engaging in a dinner for two on Valentine’s Day and regretfully crying about it afterward, since you’ve done it once or twice yourself (via Twitter).

Like Father Like Daughter

Many parents encourage their kids to grow up and become whatever they want. Sometimes, though, kids painfully stray far away from their parent’s footsteps and become something completely different. Both are normal. Parents just want to see their kids happy, so if they get a job drawing a duck, then so be it. This social media post shared a cute story of a father and daughter working from home together, and although it’s normal, the contrast is pretty odd. But while the father was on a conference call for space engineering, the daughter was drawing a duck. We’re still not sure what her job is, but it sounds like a lot more fun than ordering fuselage prototypes (via PupABC).

Twitter

Financial Advisor, At Your Service

When we’re kids, money doesn’t make that much sense to us. We understand it as something that causes stress and that we need to survive. That’s why four-year-olds might be the best financial advisors because of their innocent views on money. Social media pointed this out with this adorable Tweet. When these kids watched their parents struggle with money, they suggested they work harder and earn more of it. That’s kind of what you can do, if only it were that easy (via TheCatWhisprer).

Pyramid Scheme

When we were in college, most of us had big aspirations for our future. We imagined ourselves with successful jobs and a lot of cash. But unfortunately, it wasn’t most of our realities. And as horrible as it is, it’s normal to not get a job straight out of college. Or in this case, ever. When this person got their Egyptology degree, they learned the hard way that success doesn’t come easy. They couldn’t get a job, and as a result, paid more money to get a Ph.D. teaching other people about egyptology, so they could get themselves into the same situation. It looks like there’s going to be an abundance of egyptology teachers and no egyptology jobs (via PupABC).

Twitter

Time To Wake Up

No one likes using an alarm, especially when it goes off for work. Our hearts pound in our chests and our stomachs sink. It’s the feeling of dread we feel every Monday through Friday. This social media post called out the iPhone alarm sound that most of us use daily. It’s loud, booming, and horrible to listen to, but we’ve gotten so used to it, that we usually just smack our phone and turn off the alarm until we’re ready to get out of bed (via Twitter).

Twitter

Don’t Try This At Home

Watching people attempt to do crazy stunts on television is some of our favorite trash television. There’s nothing like watching someone else completely fail at something we’d never try to do. We’re usually sitting with a big bowl of popcorn, or in this case, M&M’s, watching a complete and utter failure of a human being. When the stuntman announces to not try this at home, what does he think we’re going to do? The best part is that he usually says that as we’re shoveling a handful of junk food into our mouths, as this social media post points out. And it happens so often, we think nothing of it (via Twitter).

Twitter

Anything Else?

Kids are often the hardest people to please. They can never make a decision, throw tantrums, and want to eat junk food all the time. This mom pointed out the most hilarious, weirdest truth about kids on social media. When they say they’re hungry, we list tons of food they could eat. It’s never anything they want, and they’re left feeling unsatisfied and like there aren’t enough options. Next time, this parent needs to list one thing and say that’s all they have (via Twitter).

What Life Should Be Like

In 2020, the world changed. We didn’t know what life was supposed to be like until 2020 and during the pandemic, when we spent our time making art and dancing. With so much free time, there was nothing else to do but to create. It became our new normal. As this post on social media points out, we went back to what life was supposed to be like. Spending our time in our pajamas, without any stress, making bread and art… that’s what life is supposed to be like. Most of us would be lying if we said we didn’t miss that part of the pandemic (via PupABC).

Twitter

A Bigger Wife Budget

Being in a relationship means you have to make sacrifices. If your partner wants to do something or feels upset, it’s up to you to work through it together. But do you ever find that the monetary balance is uneven? You’re not alone. As this husband pointed out on social media, it looks like wives have a bigger budget than their husbands. Why is that? It must be the shoes, clothes, and other fancy things that women want that men usually couldn’t care less about (via Twitter).

Twitter

Before and After Marriage

When we get married, we often sign away most of our freedom. It’s a normal time to make compromises and think about something else. While there’s beauty in getting married, it can stress some people out. This person on social media called out the little stressors that come with everyday married life, and that includes how to order the house. There’s a wrong way to put milk in your fridge. His wife must have pointed that out because most of us likely never thought twice about how we put the milk away, but it happens so often with couples, we forget it’s weird (via Twitter).

A New Type Of Detention

The pandemic took our old routines and tossed them out the window. Schools had to try a new way to teach kids and make sure they were behaving. That’s where Zoom detention came in. Understandably, some kids had a tough time with the transition, especially younger kids. So when this kid wasn’t paying attention in Zoom 4th grade, they got Zoom detention. They had to sit in a room, on Zoom, in their own home. At the time, it was completely normal and no one thought any different of it. Luckily, this mom thinks it’s hilarious and called the school out on social media. How can they expect young kids to sit at their computers and stare at a screen all day? At least those times are behind us (via PupABC).

Twitter

You’re Not One Of Those People

When we feel comfortable with someone, we’re chatty and lively. It’s likely obvious when we don’t feel comfortable around someone since we don’t talk as much and are a bit quieter. So when someone says, “you’re so quiet,” we may find it offensive, especially because it’s likely they’re one of those people we don’t feel comfortable around. This social media Tweet nailed it. The next time you’re about to call someone quiet, think again (via Twitter)

Twitter

Sorry, Next

When a girl says they want a guy that makes them laugh, save yourself the embarrassment of making her laugh and thinking she’s choosing you. She’s not talking about you. You’re already in the friend zone, buddy. This social media post did an excellent job of pointing that out. She’s likely complaining to you not because she’s trying to hint she wants you, but because she feels safe with you as a friend. It’s normal for a bestie to confide in another bestie (via Twitter).

Twitter

It Wasn’t A Burglar

Sibling rivalries are the most hilarious and vicious ones out there. This is especially true when it’s between two sisters and their clothes, and it’s normal for your sibling to want to wear your favorite top. This person mentioned a time their sister asked if they stole their sweater. She replied with common sense, and asked, who else would have stolen it, a burglar? She made her point very clear, and she was right. A burglar isn’t going to steal your cute top, they’re going to steal your electronics and jewelry (via Twitter).

When You Want To Disappear

There are times when we feel like being social, and times when we don’t feel like being social. There are times when we want to lie in bed and watch Netflix, and other times when we want to drink the night away. That’s the ebb and flow of life. So when this person subtly mentioned that fact on their social media, we can’t help but nod our heads. When we open a chat, we tell ourselves we’ll respond later. Sometimes we do, and other times we completely forget. Likely, we’ll even forget about the message for days, making our friends and family feel like we don’t love them. It’s unintentional most of the time, and we do want to respond, but sometimes we just don’t (via PupABC).

Twitter

Strategic Cheating

Taking an exam in school is stressful. It was hard not to cheat, especially when we were surrounded by other smarter kids who probably knew the answers better than us. As this person called out on social media, we probably put an answer down, looked at the test next to yours, and then completely changed our answer. It’s completely normal and is the harsh reality of test taking, and technically isn’t cheating, since you tried to put the answer down first (via Twitter)

Twitter

Sorry I’m Late

Most of us get distracted pretty easily. It’s hard nowadays in the world of social media, to stay focused on one thing at a time. Our phones don’t help, either. That being said, we’ve likely been late time and time again for odd reasons. As this person pointed out, one of those reasons was likely sitting in a towel after our shower and staring at a wall. If you’ve ever gotten so lost in the depths of your thinking mind right after a shower, you’re not alone. For some reason, sitting on your bed and staring at the wall in your towel feels like a great thing to do. It’s so normal, we forget it’s a bit strange (via Twitter).

Winning Therapy

We’re not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but going to a therapist is normal. People often break up with their therapists when they don’t feel there’s any progression, or they feel like they can’t completely open up to them. It’s hard to find a therapist you completely trust, so when you do find that person, it’s always a good idea to keep them around. Being able to say anything and everything to a therapist is the goal of therapy, so let’s hope this person wanted this outcome, though it’s oddly normal to want to trick your therapist, or “win” therapy (via PupABC).

PupABC

You’re No Help

At work, we all have breaking points, especially when we don’t feel satisfied with our jobs. There have been times we’ve wanted to call out our manager or say something completely harsh to them, but we held it back. This person reached their breaking point, which is normally going to happen after some time. When their manager asked how long it would take to fix something with their help, they causally said it would take twice as long. It’s painfully funny and accurate, though most of us will stick to biting our tongues (via PupABC).

Twitter

Not Going

It’s nice to be invited somewhere. It makes us feel good and like people want to be around us. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to go. Most of us can oddly relate to wanting to get invited places but knowing, deep down, we’re going to say no. Honestly, we just want the ego boost and to know we’re desired. That’s about it, and then we can happily go back to our antisocial lives (via Twitter).

Twitter

The Course Is Too Hard

When this professor told their students most of them won’t pass the course, what did they think was going to happen? That’s not the best way to start class, and it’s one way to set expectations that most of them won’t pass the course. Unfortunately, it’s completely normal for a professor to say something like this to set the bar high (via Twitter)

PupABC

The Future Looks Grim

This social media post hit too close to home, especially for those of you nearing 30. No one wants to admit there is a sense of dread hanging heavy on thirty-year-olds shoulders. The way they put it, though, makes our reality seem hilarious. When we were kids, we couldn’t wait to grow up, and now that we’re grown up, we wish we could go back in time. The back pain is one thing, and most of us are probably still getting over a bad breakup. And the sense of dread about society is entirely another thing we don’t even want to deal with (via PupABC).

Twitter

Here It Comes

When we turn on the tap, we expect it to come out of the tap. But those seconds beforehand, as the water comes out of the shower head, are the most terrifying. It’s as if we’re frozen in time, and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. All we can do is brace ourselves for the inevitable. It’s pretty normal for this to happen, but we still feel the same sense of fear every time it happens (via Twitter).

Twitter

Moms Around The World

If you’re a mom, you can most likely attest to this. How often have you said the same things to your kids, only to have it go in one ear and out the other? We tell them to listen closely, even with the knowledge that we’re going to say the same thing hundreds, if not thousands more times, and for eighteen years or more. It’s a normal part of being a parent, and like an unspoken contract, parents have to sign up for. Still, most parents love it and wouldn’t change it for the world, though saying the same thing multiple times would surely get annoying (via Twitter)
