Hilarious Beach Fails That Ruined These People’s Summers

Monica June 12, 2024

Going to the beach is a memorable part of many people’s summer vacations. There’s nothing better than putting on your bathing suit, filling a cooler with beer, and sitting under the sun all day listening to the waves crash on the shore.

Sometimes, though, it’s not all smooth sailing. There are times when we head to the beach and it’s a complete and utter failure whether it’s from sunburn, an aggressive seagull attack, or losing our phones. So we collected the best beach fails that certainly ruined these people’s days and maybe their entire summers. They’re so cringe-worthy, it makes us never want to go to the beach again.

Reddit

Here Comes The Wave

In this photo, you can see a woman posing for a picture in the waves. Normally, this sort of picture would be cute and a perfect representation of summertime. But that doesn’t mean it’s always perfect. A moment before her friend snapped the picture, a huge wave came barreling through the ocean and completely knocked her over. She immediately fell over and was carried towards the shore. Next time, it’s a good idea to make sure there are no giant waves on the horizon before snapping a beach photo (via Reddit).

Reddit

Pesky Beach Thieves

Beach thieves are a big problem, especially when it comes to snagging some all-important beach sandals. Just when you think you’re having a perfect day and beautiful swim, you realize someone stole your beach sandals, phone, or wallet. One beachgoer found the perfect solution to those beach thieves, and that was to use a bike lock to secure them. It seems a bit ridiculous considering the bike lock is probably more expensive than the sandals, but it’ll certainly prevent a thief from wrecking their trip to the beach (via Reddit).

Why Snorkel When You Can Selfie?

Modern times mean more time for selfies and less time for exploring. As sad as it is, it’s the harsh truth of our society. Why would you want to explore a world full of color and fish when you can take selfies standing above the water? Even though there’s probably not much to see in that shallow sandbed, at least the girl is making an effort unlike the woman behind her (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Freshen Up!

It’s always better to do something yourself if you want it done the right way. When this beachgoer asked his father to grab him the sunscreen, his father handed him a can of Febreze air freshener instead. It looks like he completely forgot to bring the sunscreen and grabbed the wrong bottle, which also happens to be orange like bottles of sunscreen. It looks like there’s going to be a lot of sunburn happening on the beach that day. At least they’ll smell good (via Big Global Travel)!

Reddit

Wrong Size

This is probably the worst beach fail out of all of them. Not only did this poor kid go commando in front of a ton of strangers, but he had to change into a Men’s XL bathing suit bottom while simultaneously swimming in the ocean. There’s nothing worse than showing your bare bum to tons of people and then having to put on oversized shorts. At least this experience is now a memory, though one that’s burned into his head forever (via Reddit)

Reddit

The Livestream

The lifeguards on this beach in Lithuania took their job to another level. For anyone caught peeing on camera, they would upload that video to YouTube for the world to see. We’re not sure why anyone would choose to pee in public when they have the ocean right there. It looks like these lifeguards are going to start a new streaming service soon (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

How Not To Get Burned

Sometimes, no matter how much sunscreen you put on your skin, it’s never enough. That’s exactly what happened to this woman. Instead of risking the sunburn, she decided to protect every inch of her body. At least she’s still at the beach, though it doesn’t seem very enjoyable. If she’s so afraid of the sun, why doesn’t she just sit under an umbrella? What gets us the most, though, are her bare ankles. Maybe they’re sunburn-proof (via Reddit).

Reddit

Foul Play

This random dog came out of nowhere and stole this person’s soccer ball. When this person tried to take it back in the shallow surf, they reached down, grabbed it, and then fell in front of tons of people. To make matters worse, those people laughed at him. There’s nothing worse than a group of people making fun of you for falling and failing to catch a dog. He should just give up and get a new soccer ball (via Reddit).

Reddit

Waves Crashed This Proposal

This woman’s husband tried to plan the perfect engagement. He went through loops to get her to the beach so he could propose to her with the sound of the waves and the soft setting light behind her. But instead of sweeping her heart away, the ocean swept him away. As he tried to propose, a huge wave knocked him off his feet. Luckily, he didn’t lose the ring and the couple ended up getting married. It turned out for the best (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

The Shell Of Wonders

When this kid wanted to discover certain wonders at the beach, he sought about seeking preserved shells. So when he found a collection of small shells, he thought he’d hit the jackpot. But it turned out these shells are nothing more than a small handful of… pistachio shells. Nobody had the heart to tell him they were only pistachio shells. Maybe he’ll realize it when he’s older and opens up a pack of pistachio shells (via Reddit).

Reddit

Epic Uncoordination

To put it lightly, this was a concoction of bad luck and uncoordination. Not only did this person witness a bike catastrophe, but it happened on the beach while these two women were supposed to be enjoying a beautiful summer bike ride. We can all relate since we’ve all fallen off our bikes when we were learning how to ride them. Usually, this happened when we were younger. Unfortunately, this happened to a fully grown adult (via Reddit).

Google Maps

Check Out The View

This person took the sunscreen application a little bit too literally. He’s paler than the sand, and will now forever be caught on Google Street View gazing at the… ocean. That’s right, nothing to see there, just the ocean. Anyway, maybe next time he needs to lighten up on the sunscreen so he can get a tiny bit tan (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Revenge Of The Clam

These people thought they scored the jackpot when they took home a black seashell. But it wasn’t until they were on the LA freeway that they learned it was a clam. As they played around with it, its tongue came sliding out. Everyone screamed before chucking it out the window. Poor clam, he never even got a chance. Worst of all, he didn’t even end up back in the ocean, but on the side of the road as roadkill (via Reddit).

Reddit

Wine And Burn

There’s nothing like good old wine and dining. But what about wine and burning? That’s exactly what happened to this poor soul, who turned bright red after leaving a bottle of wine on his chest. He should have hit the bottle of sunscreen instead of the bottle of wine to prevent a catastrophe. Hopefully, he learned from his alcohol mistakes (via Reddit).

Reddit

Watch Where You’re Going

Before sprinting through the beach, it’s always best to look behind you. While this regular guy was trying to get a kite to fly, he ended up running backward and straight into a trash can. That’s a sight to see. But we’re left with tons of questions, like how big was the trash can, did he get a scar, and did he fall inside the can or simply on top of it (via Big Global Travel)?

Reddit

Getting Buried Is A Bad Idea

Having your friends bury you in the sand is all fun and games until something goes wrong, like the tide suddenly coming up to high, or a seagull suddenly attacking you. If you try and dodge an incoming seagull, chances are, it won’t work if you’re completely buried in the sand. There’s no way to lift yourself and run away when a bunch of angry seagulls are pecking at your face (via Escape).

Reddit

Someone’s A Genius

This is less of a beach fail and more of an ingenious idea. This Reddit user created reverse flip-flops that make it look like you’re walking in the opposite direction than you are. For all those people who like to hop on other people’s footprints, it’s time to be fooled. This prototype is useful for people who have beach stalkers, which is pretty unlikely in the first place (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Dressed For The Wrong Occasion

There’s a chance this day at the beach was suddenly sprung on her at the last minute, but it’s more likely she simply didn’t know how to dress. At best, she’s flexible and decides to head to the beach regardless of her outfit, but it’s more likely she thought boots and leggings would pair well with sand and sea. Hopefully next time she’ll get it right (via Escape).

Reddit

That’s A Dolphin

We’ll give this Reddit user credit for trying to protect all the other beachgoers from a potentially deadly shark, even if they were wrong. At the very least, they could have saved someone from a potential shark, even if it was just a cute dolphin. The chances of getting attacked by a shark are only slightly more than one in four million, so this lifeguard probably weighed the chance of it being a shark before admitting it was a dolphin (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Photo Fail

It’s not every day you get to head to the beach with your friends, so when you do, it’s important to document the experience. Sometimes, you get some pretty decent pictures, but other times, they turn into complete failures. This friend duo tried to take a nice picture at the beach when the other one tripped. With nothing to grab except her friend’s chest, the person snapping the photo managed to get it at the best moment. At least they’ll remember that beach day forever (via Reddit).

Reddit

Holiday House Cat

Cats love a good bath, so surely they would also enjoy the sea. It’s like taking one giant bath, with bigger waves, more sand, and unfamiliar smells. Unfortunately, cats are not like dogs and do not easily adapt to the ocean. There’s a reason they’re called house cats. Just look at the poor guy’s face! He looks like he doesn’t know if he should laugh, cry, or vomit. All three are probably a good idea (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Not Entertained

As creatures of leisure, cats are always lounging around acting like divas. Because of this, this Reddit user thought there would be no harm in bringing his cat to the beach during Christmas. Christmas is all about family, after all, so it only makes sense he wanted to bring him. Whether she got sand in her eye or can’t be fussed with the seagulls, this kitty is definitely over the beach. It’s time to bring her home (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Romance Is Alive

This person is clearly in a loving relationship….with an inflatable doll. Whether he knows he’s riding the floatie this way or not, we’ll never know. Either way, someone was smart enough to snap a picture and upload it to the internet. This is a hilarious way to ruin your summer and give some entertainment back to those relaxing on the beach (via Escape).

Reddit

The Ultimate Photo Bomb

There’s nothing better than nailing a photo bomb, especially when it’s with a group of strangers. This person ruined these girls’ perfect beach photographs by slyly showing up in the background and posing exactly as they were. There was no way he could let that pass him by without at least trying to pose. It’s well-crafted and proves he was in the right place at the right time (via Reddit).

Reddit

The Aftermath Of A Failed Commercial

This gorgeous photo shows the aftermath of a $60,000 Dodge truck commercial that completely failed. The directors forgot to take the tide into account. We can’t fight against mother nature, as this photo proves. She’ll always win (via Reddit).

Reddit

Get A Room

This could have ended a lot worse for this couple. As a police helicopter was looking for a suspect, they found two people copulating in the sand. At least they left them alone and told them to get a room so they could continue with their search. There’s no shame in these moonlighting activities, as long as you keep it on the DL and away from the public eye. It’s not every day a police helicopter comes flying overhead (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Seconds Before The Catastrophe

By the looks of the girl’s face in this photograph, she’s having the best beach day of her life. She’s soaking up the sun, swimming in the ocean, and playing around with cute sea creatures. Doesn’t she know jellyfish sting? Seconds after snapping this photo, the jellyfish stung her and left a painful mark. That’s one way to ruin your beach day (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

Even though the cover of a book never truly shows how good the book is, we can’t help but judge it whenever we pick it up. You usually want people to know you’re reading a good book with a simple cover, not one with a terrifying face on it. Maybe this woman did it on purpose to scare the seagulls away from her snacks (via Reddit).

Reddit

How To Survive Seagull Territory

Never let your guard down when you’re around seagulls. The skies are filled with winged thieves, so it’s important to keep your food tucked away and hidden. They never shy away from attacking from all sides and usually have a friend or two with them on their mission. This person’s beach day was completely ruined thanks to this flying seagull who just couldn’t say no to their donut (via Reddit).

Reddit

Watch Out For The Shark

You never know when a shark is going to appear in the water. It’s always important to be wary of what’s floating around you. In this case, there was a shark scare. But it wasn’t an actual shark. It was a vicious dog with a shark fin attached to its head. Everyone better watch out, because this shark can walk on land (via Obsev).

Reddit

Attack Of The Wave

As this Reddit user captioned their photo, “You can almost taste the lungful of salt water that young boy is about to inhale.” Without fail, this family was attacked by a giant wave that snuck up behind them, just as they were trying to pose for a cute family photo. The little girl in pink isn’t even looking in the right direction, and all hope is lost for the little boy. They’re about to be tumbled by the giant wave (via Escape).

Reddit

Change For One Hundred?

This Reddit user told a story about how an eight-year-old came running up the beach, screaming they found $100. Even though one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, this isn’t the case here. When their mom went to look at the money, they realized it was Monopoly money as opposed to an actual $100 bill. Let’s hope they broke the news to their kid nicely (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

A True Inspiration

This person has to win the award for best beachgoer. How they dragged a large couch to the beach is beyond us, but they did a fantastic job setting it up. They have front row and center seats, and won’t have to deal with pesky sand getting into their bathing suit bottoms (via Escape).

Reddit

A Little R&R

There’s nothing better than listening to the waves while doing yoga. This Reddit user shared a hilarious photo of his wife doing a hilarious yoga position. We’re not sure why she has her suitcase with her. Maybe she was trying to lift off into outer space and leave everything and everyone she knows behind her (via Big Global Travel).

Reddit

Inflatable Floaties Strike Again

There’s nothing harder than trying to get in and out of those inflatable beach floaties. Not only do they bend and break at odd angles, but they tend to lose air rather quickly. Before you know it, you’re sinking to the bottom of the pool. We’re not sure why this person is on the sand, but it looks like they’re struggling even on solid ground (via Escape).
