Celebrities’ Heartfelt Reactions To Matthew Perry Passing

Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to offer his condolences. In his tweet, he said, “Matthew Perry’s passing is shocking and saddening. I’ll never forget the schoolyard games we used to play, and I know people around the world are never going to forget the joy he brought them. Thanks for all the laughs, Matthew. You were loved – and you will be missed.” Matthew Perry grew up with Trudeau and had strong political ties with Canada. Perry once even described his Canadian upbringing as, “the pale Canadian kid with a quick mouth.” Perry once claimed he beat Trudeau up in the fifth grade since he was a couple of years older than him (via Twitter).

You may remember Aisha Tyler, who played Charlier Wineler on the ninth season of Friends. In a post, Tyler commented on Perry’s stellar work ethic throughout the years, saying, “He had a gentleness and generosity of spirit that was unparalleled. I learned how to tell a joke perfectly just by watching him work. And I will never forget the moment he leaned in, on my first night of taping Friends, to tell me warmly, ‘Get ready for your life to change.’ Rest well, Matthew Perry. Thank you for the kindness and laughter.”

Tyler even recalled the moment Perry said that to her, saying, “It was a really sweet, kind thing to say to someone who’s just petrified and just trying not to pee on herself a little bit from fear.” Tyler took this memory with her for the rest of her life. Perry’s Chandler, had a mother on Friends portrayed by Morgan Fairchild. She said, “I’m heartbroken about the untimely death of my “son”, Matthew Perry. I’m sending love & condolences to his friends & family, especially his dad, John Bennett Perry, who I worked with on Flamingo Road & Falcon Crest.” She remembered her time with Perry, and people even believed she was his real mother. As she remembered him, she revealed, “He was just a very endearing, fun, wonderful, wonderful guy and I send my love and condolences to his family. The co-creators of Friends all recounted their time working with Perry and the sadness they felt about his passing. In a statement, they said, “We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives. He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words.” They truly couldn’t have chosen a better person to portray the role.

The statement continued on, “From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. In a video, Aniston broke down as she paid tribute to her longtime co-worker Perry. “We didn’t know. We weren’t equipped, we weren’t able to deal with it. Nobody ever dealt with that. And at the idea of even losing him…” She could barely finish her sentences because of her tears. Aniston worked closely with Perry on Friends for the entire duration of the show. At one point, she even helped him through his drinking addiction by showing up to his trailer and helping him realize his drinking addiction wasn’t as much of a secret as he thought it was (via YouTube).

In his own reaction, longtime actor and comedian Hank Azaria recalls how Perry helped him get sober. He said, “Matthew was the first friend I made in Los Angeles when I moved there. I was 21, he was 16. In an Instagram post, actress Alyssa Milano paid her tribute to Perry’s passing. Milano starred alongside Perry on ‘Who’s the Boss,’ and had the privilege of getting to know him. She said, “Matty was always the funniest person in the room. And the KINDEST. He was kind. Matty, remember when we used to go play bingo at that church in the valley? You made me laugh that painful kind of laugh. A cry laugh. You made me cry-laugh. Actress Christina Ricci portrayed Joey’s sister Mary-Theresa during the first season of Friends. Even though she never met him, she felt like she did. I never met Matthew Perry, but I loved him. ‘Friends’ saved me numerous times during hard and lonely times in my life. I adored his character and wanted to marry Chandler Bing as a teenager. One of the most famous singers in the world, Adele reacted to Perry’s sudden passing. Even though she never met the actor in person, it doesn’t mean she didn’t appreciate and value him from afar. She paid her tributes to Perry at her show, saying, “I’ll remember that character for the rest of my life. He’s probably the best comedic character of all time.” She praised him for his openness and ability to be “so open with his struggles with addiction and sobriety,” which is “incredibly, incredibly brave.”

She went on to say, “It is always so shocking, especially someone who made you laugh and who brought so much joy to your life that you don’t know. This is what I find so strange, I never met him in my life.
