The financial crisis of 2008 hit businesses around the world and Tesla was no exception. The company had to undergo some reorganizing, meaning people got fired. Musk became the CEO of Tesla to replace one of its co-founders, who fell prey to the woes of 2008.
That year, Tesla began selling its first electric car, one that Musk himself had helped develop. The company has since branded itself with its electric vehicles, many of which can be run entirely on solar energy. He has remained at Tesla, and as of 2019, was the longest-serving CEO of any automobile company in the world.
