Oblivious: Celebrities Who Are Out of Touch With Reality

Darren August 22, 2024

Celebrities are often desperate to remind their fans that they’re just like you and me. It’s true that at their cores, they’re regular human beings with the same struggles and problems. However, that also means they share the capacity to make moronic decisions with us. And that’s often amplified to an even new level because many of them are out of touch with reality.

So let’s look at how these oblivious and tone-deaf celebrities embarrassed themselves in public. The amazing thing is that many of them thought that they were relating to regular people and/or societal norms. But they actually showed they’re living in a different stratosphere with their crazy actions. Check them out here.

Sam Smith

The global pandemic was a tough time for everybody including celebrities. However, no one wants to hear about some rich person complaining about how their life is supposedly a “struggle”. That’s why Smith attracted scorn when they shared a photo of crying in their gigantic mansion. Yes, the struggle was real but it became even worse.

Planet Radio

Later, the singer said that it was the first time that they spent more than three weeks at home in eight years. Usually, they spend time touring around the world. It’s safe to say that Smith was definitely out of touch with reality. We’ve seen some dumb reactions but this was up there with the worst (via Daily Mirror).

Justin Bieber

Canada’s biggest superstar visited the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam in 2013. But the teen idol made waves for the wrong reasons because he said the dumbest thing ever. “Truly inspiring to be able to come here,” he said. “Anne was a great girl. Hopefully, she would have been a belieber.”

France 24

There are so many things wrong with this that we don’t know where to start. Firstly, calling her a ‘great girl’ is incredibly condescending. Meanwhile, hoping that she would have been one of his fans doesn’t bring the immense scale of her tragic story to life (via The Guardian).

Salma Hayek

Hayek attracted the Internet’s scorn in 2014 when she explained her childrearing problems (via The Times). She explained: “If you are making pizza, there is one who doesn’t like cheese and another who hates tomato. Our chef sometimes looks so downhearted. He’s always saying, ‘Madam, what are we going to do?'”

Hello!

Our hearts break for the Mexican actress and her long-suffering children because they must be starving. Meanwhile, shed a tear for the poor private chef who is probably enjoying an outrageous salary. Hayek is so out of touch with reality that she doesn’t understand.

Kim Kardashian

Kardashian comes from a wealthy family background. After all, her dad was O.J. Simpson’s lawyer so she had the best everything. Finally, she became Paris Hilton’s bestie in school before making an infamous sex tape that ignited her reality star career. It’s fair to say that she hasn’t struggled throughout her life.

Us Weekly

That’s why women across the world responded furiously when Kardashian gave them the following advice. She said: “I have the best advice for women in business. Get your f***ing ass up and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days.” This went down like a lead balloon because she was so out of touch with reality (via Vanity Fair).

Marion Cotillard

This French star raised eyebrows with some controversial conspiracy theories in 2008. Cotillard built a strong reputation as an arthouse movie star before a blockbuster role in The Dark Knight Rises. But she lost a lot of goodwill when she shared her opinions about 9/11 and the moon landings.

People

She explained (via Huff Post): “We see other towers of the same kind being hit by planes, are they burned? There was a tower, I believe it was in Spain, which burned for 24 hours. It never collapsed. None of these towers collapsed. And there, in a few minutes, the whole thing collapsed.” Yikes.

Kim Kardashian – Again

In 2019, Kardashian outraged Japan and her regular haters when she attempted to trademark the word ‘kimono.’ Everybody knows that a kimono is a traditional embroidered Japanese robe and an integral part of their culture. She instantly received accusations of cultural appropriation.

L.A. Times

Meanwhile, some people observed that her shapewear underwear line didn’t even resemble kimonos. Kardashian saw it as a play on her name and said she only wanted to trademark the word in a particular font. But it doesn’t change the reality that she showed contempt for over 1200 years of Japanese history (via W Magazine).

Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow is one of those entitled Hollywood stars who became a caricature of themselves. These days no one takes her seriously because of her quack health theories and beliefs. Also, calling a child ‘Apple’ isn’t the best way to establish credibility. Furthermore, the Goop founder loathes ordinary people.

Sky News

The delusional actress told the Wall Street Journal that she brought yoga into the mainstream. She said: “I went to do a yoga class in LA recently, and the 22-year-old girl behind the counter was like, ‘Have you ever done yoga before?’ And literally, I turned to my friend, and I was like, ‘You have this job because I’ve done yoga before.”

Finneas

Billie Eilish’s older brother is quietly emerging as one of Hollywood’s most influential figures. However, that’s easier for him because he comes from a family with money. That’s also why people didn’t like what he had to say about ‘working hard.’ It’s one of the most tone-deaf things that a celebrity can say.

Seventeen Magazine

Finneas tweeted and deleted the following: “Shooting your shot” is promoted widely and I think honestly, it’s a little overrated. Work super hard alone or with your closest friends.” It’s easy to work with close friends when they’re already millionaires. Most people don’t have this luxury but thanks for the heads-up (via MTV).

Jennifer Aniston

Sometimes celebrities can be right but also completely wrong at the same time. Aniston faced a backlash when she criticized our modern culture that celebrates people for being famous for doing nothing. She said: “You’re famous from TikTok, you’re famous from YouTube. You’re famous from Instagram. It’s sort of almost like it’s diluting our actor’s job.”

Shape

On the surface, there’s nothing wrong with that point. But it’s very hypocritical when we look at Aniston’s background because she’s an original nepo baby. Aniston’s parents are both millionaire actors which gave her an easy pathway to fame. She showed her lack of self-awareness with this out-of-touch comment (via Fox News).

Dr. Dre

Hip-hop icon Dr. Dre enraged the Internet in 2019 with one of the dumbest Instagram posts ever. He shared a photo with his daughter and wrote a polarizing caption. My daughter got accepted into USC all on her own,” he said. “No jail time.” This was a tasteless reference to the notorious Lori Loughlin incident.

Hollywood Reporter

It also drew attention to the fact that Dr. Dre gave a $70 million donation to USC. They also named a building after him so it’s not shocking that they also gave his daughter a place. Social media users politely pointed this out and finally, the rap legend deleted the post. He was just so out of touch with reality in his excitement (via Elle).

Akon

One of the highest-selling artists ever, Akon isn’t stuck for cash. That’s why it annoyed many people when he shared some life advice on Instagram. He wrote the following caption: “Misery is a choice. I chose happiness #youonlyonce YOLO.” It’s easier to look on the bright side of life from the driver’s seat of a Rolls-Royce.

AP

Unsurprisingly, some folks thought that he was out of touch with reality. What is it with celebrities and their burning desire to share life advice? It’s different if a paparazzi member puts them on the spot and they give a stupid answer. But this was incredibly tone-deaf from the superstar (via Complex).

Gwyneth Paltrow – Again

There are so many things we could say about Paltrow because she is a weapon of a woman. From her dubious health advice to her daily routine, the list goes on and on. But let’s look at her Christmas gift recommendations ahead of the 2023 holiday season. Some incredible selections would leave people breathless.

Glamour

She included a $400 block of cheese, a $14,000 backgammon set, and a $2000 gong. We admire how Paltrow is living in a special out-of-touch universe right now. She doesn’t even pretend to mix with peasants and we almost respect this. At least she’s not pretending to be someone she isn’t (via Fox Business).

Donald Trump

The former U.S. President is one of the most polarizing people in the world. He claims to be a man of the people but there’s one massive issue with this. Trump loves indulging in garish, vulgar displays of wealth. That’s why he ordered the construction of a gold bathroom on his private airplane (via The Guardian).

Time

Imagine the plumber’s response when he heard that 45 wanted a golden shower. Meanwhile, Trump also allegedly blocked a collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum. They wanted to send Maurizio Cattelan’s America to the White House. This is also a golden toilet and a potshot at capitalism in the nation.

Simon Cowell

The America’s Got Talent judge is one of the richest TV personalities in the world. He reportedly has a $600 million fortune but says that money doesn’t bring happiness. That’s what most normal people want to hear from someone who has more dollars than sense. Cowell showed that he’s out of touch with reality.

CNN

In 2012, he told GQ: “Money brings you security and choice. You can make decisions in a different way if you have a lot of money. But when you have nothing, you have a naivety, and a more fearless attitude because you have nothing to lose.” There’s something unbelievably condescending about this.

Juju Smith-Schuster

People sometimes wonder why NFL and NBA players usually end up bankrupt. But then they realize that people like Smith-Schuster exist. The Patriots wideout is a Super Bowl champion and has a massive contract. But football players have zero job security because their careers could end with a single injury.

MassLive.com

That’s why it’s a little bit crazy that Smith-Schuster bought his dog a diamond collar. He spent thousands of dollars on the accessory in a garish display of wealth. Fans immediately shook their heads because it seemed as wise as sprinkling extra sugar on a birthday cake (via SBNation).

Tom Hiddleston’s Speech

Sometimes celebrities dig holes for themselves by being self-indulgent and unbearable. That’s what happened in 2017 when Hiddleston won a Golden Globe for The Night Manager. During his speech, he rambled about UN Children Fund’s Workers telling him that they watched the series and that it kept them sane.

Vanity Fair

His meandering story didn’t go down well because people thought it was tone-deaf. It also met with a puzzled reaction because he was weirdly complimenting himself. Later, to his credit, Hiddleston apologized but it proved that he was out of touch with reality (via Entertainment Weekly).

Sean Connery

Connery was one of Hollywood’s most respected actors before he died in 2020. However, his passing also revived his unsavory comments about hitting women. He believed that it was acceptable to hit them in specific situations if they asked for it. Furthermore, he doubled down on the controversial views in multiple interviews across 20 years.

People

The former Bond actor said: “They want to have the last word, and you give them the last word, but they’re not happy with the last word. They want to say it again and get into a really provocative situation. Then, I think it’s absolutely right.” It’s safe to say that this archaic view was out of touch with reality (via People).

Millie Bobby Brown

Many A-listers like to think that ordinary people will lap up everything they do because they often do. But they don’t realize that we can see through their lies and money-grabbing schemes. Brown discovered this the hard way when she unveiled her new historical novel in 2023. She failed to mention that a ghostwriter did the work while she took the credit (via The Conversation).

CNN

Shockingly, the 19-year-old full-time actress – who is also preparing for a wedding – didn’t write a 320-page book. But her name was on the cover while the ghostwriter’s was inside. Many people called her out of touch with reality and condemned her privilege. Some writers even reconsidered their existence because it became an instant bestseller.

Alicia Silverstone

It’s amazing how many celebrities are out of touch with reality. They have no concept of the struggle of the daily grind that billions of ordinary people face every day. Silverstone proved this in her ridiculous book where she gave some advice to new mothers. It’s truly special because she’s so tone-deaf.

The Guardian

She wrote: “I know what you’re thinking: Who am I to tell you that you should consider taking time away from work? I assure you that it’s not something that only the super-privileged and trust-fund endowed can afford.” It’s nice of her to remind us that she is super-rich and has a trust fund (via Us Magazine).

Logan Paul

Paul has shown that he is out of touch with reality on multiple occasions. One of the most disturbing was when he went to Tokyo’s tragic Aokigahara Forest and filmed suicide victims. He laughed in the video as he showed a lack of sensitivity and taste in the horrible circumstances.

Rolling Stone

Then there are his ridiculously garish displays of wealth. He entered his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather with a one-million-dollar Charizard Pokemon card on a chain around his neck. It was obscene but Paul didn’t care because this is his brand and he’s not a man of the people (via Fox Business).

Kim Kardashian III

Kardashian enters this list for an unprecedented third time after the following tweet. She wrote: “After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time.”

Elle

Many people couldn’t understand how it was a surprise after the two-week quarantine. Maybe she kidnapped them all before releasing them on the island in some kind of Hunger Games scenario. Nonetheless, Kardashian proved again that she is out of touch with reality because her so-called ‘normal’ is renting a private island (via The Guardian).

Sienna Miller

Never look to celebrities for health advice because it won’t end well. Take Miller’s example because it’s one of the dumbest things ever. She infamously said in 2009: “I love cigarettes. Love them. I think the more positive approach you have to smoking, the less harmful it is.”

People

Somehow we don’t think that’s the way it works. Mind over matters works in specific circumstances but this isn’t one of them. These days, Miller is fighting against her smoking addiction and uses nicotine patches. It’s like a child saying that eating unlimited candy is fine as long as they brush their teeth after (via Elle).

Chrissy Teigen

The site formerly known as Twitter is a celebrity minefield. They can’t help but put their foot in it and show that they are out of touch with reality. In 2019 Teigen tweeted: “My mom treats her air pods like they’re disposable. Buys a few a month. She says they would be easier to not lose if they had….a cord.”

InStyle

Teigen is a polarizing figure at the best of times so it’s safe to say that this didn’t go down well. She deleted the tweet after apologizing because it was a terrible look. Most people don’t have the money to drop on AirPods whenever they want and they were happy to remind her about this (via Insider).

Oprah 2.0

America’s favorite talk show host came from humble beginnings. But she showed that she left them behind her in the dust when she made Oprah And Gayle’s Big Adventure. The pair pulled into a gas station to fill up their vehicle. However, there was one massive problem that left them in a befuddled state.

L.A. Times

Neither of them were able to operate the gas pump. This is one of the most mundane things ever but the celebrities couldn’t figure it out. Nothing is more out of touch with reality than this because it’s such an everyday task. They usually have personal chauffeurs who do all this dirty work (via E! Online).

Kylie Jenner

Another day, another member of the Kardashian clan proves that they’re out of touch with reality. This time, it’s Kylie who showed her disdain for the environment and general society. She attracted intense criticism after the news emerged that she was taking three-minute flights in her private jet.

Sky News

It all kicked off when she posted a tasteless photo with her beau Travis Scott. The pair stood beside their private jets with the caption: ‘You wanna take mine or yours.’ Sadly, Kyle didn’t realize that we’re not in the 2000s anymore and that it’s fashionable to be green (via Deseret News).

Bella Hadid

Hadid is one of the most powerful supermodels on the planet right now and she lives a luxurious life. But she faced struggles and adversity in her teens despite having a billionaire father. Spare a thought for her tragic high school experience because she didn’t have the shoes she wanted.

Cosmopolitan

She told Vogue (via People): “I think I got my first pair of Louboutins when I graduated high school. It makes me emotional actually, because I’m so happy in this picture, for the first time in my whole adult life.” This is an amazing story that is sure to inspire millions of struggling women across the world.

Neil Gaiman

Gaiman is one of the most successful fantasy writers on the planet. He wrote brilliant novels like American Gods, Coraline, and co-authored Good Omens. Many of these became movies and TV series while Gaiman is a bonafide celebrity. However, he’s not immune to making dumb decisions.

Esquire

After a fight with his wife Amanda in New Zealand, he flew 11,000 miles to the Isle of Skye in north Scotland. This was during the height of the pandemic and it broke every guideline under the sun. Gaiman was out of touch with reality as he journeyed across the world (via The Guardian).

Oprah

Even when celebrities try to do something nice it comes off as out of touch with reality. Oprah discovered this the hard way when she had an awkward moment on her show. She had an exchange with a guest who was looking for a Christmas gift for his elderly mother. Oprah suggested a jewelry box for about $100.

Deadline

Then she reacted with shock when he said it was out of his budget. To be fair, she did have another suggestion but the initial response didn’t go down well with her fans. They said that the billionaire had left her roots far behind her. It’s a long time since she struggled for anything (via Unilad).

Kendall Jenner – Pepsi

Jenner’s Pepsi ad remains one of the most tone-deaf commercials ever. This was during the height of the protests against police brutality toward African Americans. It was an incredibly tense period so naturally, Pepsi decided to exploit it. That’s why they collaborated with everybody’s favorite nepo baby supermodel.

NBC News

The clip showed Jenner opening a can of Pepsi and handing it to a police officer so that a riot deescalates. Needless, to say many people thought that she was out of touch with reality and disrespectful. It was an insanely bad decision and one that she quickly regretted (via Time).

Gal Gadot – Imagine

There’s nothing better than a bunch of celebrities singing in times of misfortune. That’s going to help the common folk feel better about their woes for sure. This was what Gadot thought when she decided to cheer up the world during the pandemic. She gathered a cluster of her fellow A-Listers and they sang John Lennon’s Imagine.

NME

It was one of the most cringeworthy videos in the history of the world because it was so tone-deaf. Surprisingly, the peasants didn’t appreciate out-of-touch celebrities singing about how everything was going to be alright. Later Gadot admitted that it was in poor taste but still refused to apologize (via The Guardian).
