Buying a property means making the right purchase and then putting in the effort to make it your own. And although most people would love to live like the rich and famous, many can’t afford to do so. So how do the richest people in the world live? Imagine if you had unlimited money to spend on a home and property. Where and how would you live?
Looking at the homes of the well-to-do is eye-opening. While some live surprisingly basic, others have gone all out with pools, fountains and décor that will amaze you. And their properties say a lot about their personalities and how they got where they are now. From frugal to outright extravagant, here are some of the homes of the richest people alive. Perhaps you’ll get some insights into how they got so wealthy, too.
1. Warren Buffett – Omaha, Nebraska
Warren Buffett is the second richest man in the world. However, he is reputedly sparing when it comes to his living arrangements. He still lives in the 6,000-square-foot, five-bedroom home in the small city of Omaha, Nebraska. He bought the house in 1958 for $31,500 and has since resided in it. Although it’s probably worth a lot more now, some people have estimated it may be valued at $861,000.
The house was built in 1921 and reportedly, they remodeled it in 1989. Buffet has sometimes defended his use of a private jet as it was the case in a 2009 BBC interview. He said, “If I thought a different house would make my life better, I’d probably live in a different house.” He continued, “But the private jet does make my life better. I do have to travel around quite a bit.”
The house has its own handball court and is an ordinary home. It has five bedrooms and two-bathroom suites that the billionaire finds suitable for himself. There is a fence surrounding the house with security cameras installed all around. In 2007, a trespasser who was carrying a fake gun attempted to break into the compound but was stopped by security.
There are other houses in the neighborhood. The home is in a quiet street and there are hardly any signs the area has wealthy individuals. There are no extraordinary cars that wealthy people normally use. This could be the reason Buffet found the area suitable to his living standards. After all, he is famous as a conservative person.
