MP Staff March 24, 2023

Wardrobe malfunctions get all the attention these days. It doesn’t matter how many hundreds of celebrities go out dressed the nines each day because society always zeros in on those few who suffer a massive wardrobe mishap. It’s an interesting part of human psychology. We enjoy seeing celebrities mess up because it makes them more approachable and ‘normal’ in our eyes. It’s also just hilarious! When wardrobe malfunctions make it onto our screens, it’s an obvious display of human error at work. Get ready to do some double-takes because these Hollywood wardrobe malfunctions have to be seen to be believed!

Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman

It’s pretty well-known in the acting world that Julia Roberts refuses to do nude scenes. She often has a no-nudity clause in her contracts and has been known to turn down roles that contain nudity. However, when Roberts was still an up-and-coming star, she took on a role in Pretty Woman that caused her to expose more than she would have liked. Toward the end of the movie, Julia’s character is wearing a very sheer nightie and about to engage in an intimate scene with her love interest. The gown was so sheer that you could see a flash of her bare chest. The role was apparently worth it, as Julia has credited her Oscar-worthy performance in Pretty Woman as kick-starting her career!

Camila Cabello on The One Show

Camila Cabello was promoting her new hit “BAM BAM” on BBC’s The One Show when she suffered an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. The talented singer was performing her favorite dance moves from the music video when her top slipped and exposed her bare breast! Cabello received a lot of praise for the way she laughed off the incident and made fun of herself the following day on Tik Tok. The star said on Tik Tok the following day, “When my stylist asks if I wanted nip covers and I said no.” It’s great to see celebs laughing off these silly moments.

Cameron Diaz in Vanilla Sky

Cameron Diaz played Julie Gianni in the hit science fiction thriller Vanilla Sky. At one point, her character is captured and tied to a bed wearing only a sheer, skimpy white dress. As she attempts to move, the thin dress slides down Diaz’s shoulder and exposes her breast to the camera. Diaz clearly realized what had happened and shrugged the dress back into place without breaking character. Despite the mishap being caught by Diaz as it happened, this scene still made it past the editors and into the movie. We have to wonder if that was an intentional choice by the editors!

Natalie Portman in Closer

Natalie Portman’s role in Closer has received critical acclaim. She plays an exotic dancer, so viewers would be forgiven for assuming Portman would bare a lot of skin during the film. However, Portman’s character stays mostly clothed throughout the movie, except for one minor wardrobe mishap. During an intense scene where Portman’s character is speaking with Clive Owen’s Larry Gray, she leans forward and crosses her legs. This causes her bra to slip down a bit too far and reveals more than intended. The slip makes it into the movie despite Portman’s character remaining mostly dressed throughout the rest of the film.

Debbie Reynolds in Singin’ in the Rain

Singin’ in the Rain is a classic musical from 1952 and continues to be considered one of the best musicals ever produced! It’s one of the few movies that boasts a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the performers in this movie received massive attention for their roles. Debbie Reynolds plays Kathy Seldon, a performer caught between the transition of playing roles in silent films vs. “talkies.” She’s seen wearing and singing in a gorgeous pink gown, but there is one major flaw with the outfit. Despite the film’s dedicated attention to detail, somehow, the wardrobe department failed to realize Debbie’s dress was not in style during the era portrayed in the film! Whoops!

Femi Taylor in Return of the Jedi

Femi Taylor played the green-skinned Twi’lek slave Oola in Return of the Jedi. The actress was very dedicated to her role and received massive praise for her performance. At one point, Jabba (Oola’s owner) makes Oola strut about in a skimpy outfit. Jabba tugs on her chain, causing Oola to stumble. This stumble reveals a slip of her chest. Somehow, this slip made it into the movie despite George Lucas being known for scrubbing the footage of Star Wars films to make them suitable for home viewing.

The Firefighters in Gangs of New York

Gangs of New York was an ambitious film starring several big-name actors, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Liam Neeson, and more. This film was set during the 1883 New York riots and took a look at the life of Irish immigrants during that time. The film featured a gang of firefighters who wore uniforms very similar to those modern-day firefighters wear. Someone in the wardrobe department clearly overlooked this minor detail, as uniforms for civil servants looked very different in the 1880s than they did in the early 2000s when this movie was released!

Kristen Bell in Spartan

Kristen Bell gave a stunning performance as Laura Newton, the fictional US president’s missing daughter, in the film Spartan. This movie was fast-paced, action-packed, and also contains one of the most classic wardrobe malfunctions seen in Hollywood. During an intense scene, Bell’s character takes a punch so hard that it causes her character to become disheveled. Bell’s tanktop becomes askew during the scene and flashes her bare chest. This accidental slip seems to happen to a lot of actresses in Hollywood, and it’s surprising how often these wardrobe mishaps make it into the final film!

Sarah Michelle Gellar in I Know What You Did Last Summer

Sarah Michelle Gellar is best known for her role as Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but this actress has plenty of other film credits to her name. She starred in the hit horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer and suffered a wardrobe malfunction so brief that many viewers didn’t even notice it! During an intense scene in the movie, Gellar’s character is reaching for a rope to climb when her ill-fitting top moves just enough to reveal what her clothing should have been keeping hidden! Most horror fans probably didn’t even notice this moment, but it definitely counts as a wardrobe mishap.

Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator

Arnold Schwarzenegger has a massive list of credits to his name and is one of the most well-known actors of his time. The actor rarely suffered from wardrobe malfunctions, but this scene in The Terminator is well-remembered by fans. During the opening scene of the movie, Arnold’s character is walking around in his birthday suit. Clever camera angles, lighting tricks, and low-quality film preserved Arnold’s dignity for the most part, but he’s still completely exposed. The re-mastered version of this movie shows Arnold walking in all his glory, and you can see absolutely everything.

Danny Glover in The Color Purple

Danny Glover starred in The Color Purple as Mister Albert Johnson. Glover starred alongside big names in the industry, such as Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg. This film brought big issues to the attention of the mainstream. The Color Purple deals with themes like racism, domestic violence, poverty, and sexism. During his role in the film, Glover is seen wearing a clip-on tie. This movie was set in 1916, and clip-on ties weren’t invented until 1928! These tiny details may seem silly to point out, but accuracy to the times is what helps movie-goers lose themselves in the movies. The wardrobe department needs to make sure they’re doing their research!

The Background Character in Raiders of the Lost Ark

Keeping every aspect of a movie accurate to the time it portrays is a difficult yet very important job. It helps movie-goers lose themselves in the movie when they’re faced with blatant realism. Occasionally, wardrobe departments make a mistake that goes unnoticed by editors later on, and this is one such example. During a scene in the film, a background character can be seen walking down the streets of Egypt in a simple outfit of blue jeans and a t-shirt. While this wouldn’t look odd to see on the streets during 1981, when this film was made, it certainly would have stood out like a sore thumb during the film’s time period of 1936!

Russell Crowe in Gladiator

Russell Crowe starred in the epic historical drama Gladiator and received a lot of praise for his enthralling acting and intense fight scenes. This film helped reignite interest in Ancient Greco-Roman culture and managed to be very accurate to the time period it was set in, with one glaring exception. During an intense fight scene, you can see the spandex Crowe’s character is wearing underneath his outfit. This is Lyrca, which wasn’t invented until 1958! It’s just another minor detail, but very noticeable to those who understand the time period.

The Watch in Glory

Glory starred some of the biggest actors of its time, including Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, and Cary Elwes. This film received tons of accolades when it premiered for its stunning cinematography, flawless acting, and emotionally resonant narrative. The creative team was even praised for their enormous attention to detail, but somehow, they missed a major wardrobe malfunction. A child in the background of a scene sticks his hand up and reveals a digital watch that definitely did not exist during the time period the movie takes place. Somehow, no one caught this glaring mistake, and the watch can be seen pretty clearly during this scene.

Cast in Amadeus

Amadeus was one of the most ambitious films of its time. Set during Mozart’s era, this film was praised for its dedication to accuracy and even filmed major scenes in the same Opera House in Prague where Mozart’s operas debuted. Unfortunately, the crew of this film took some creative liberties that caused some serious historical inaccuracies. The most obvious wardrobe issue is the zippers that each dancer’s garment had. Zippers wouldn’t be invented for another 130 years, so it’s a pretty glaring issue within the film. However, if you can suspend your disbelief about that, then you can still immerse yourself in the world that the crew of Amadeus tried to create.

Amy Smart in Crank: High Voltage

Amy Smart played Eve Lydon in the comedy/action-thriller Crank: High Voltage. Her character is frequently seen wearing super skimpy outfits that barely cover her most intimate parts. With a wardrobe like this, it’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong. Sure enough, during a scene where Smart’s character jumps onto the back of a motorcycle, her teeny-tiny shorts reveal more than planned. Not only do viewers get an up-close look at the actress’s underwear, but they are also able to see plenty of skin!

Anne Baxter in The Ten Commandments

Anne Baxter looked stunning in this sheer, turquoise top while starring as Nefretiri in the 1956 epic The Ten Commandments. As viewers expressed awe over her gorgeous ensemble, it became clear that the wardrobe department allowed a serious mistake to get past them. The cute, lacey bra Baxter wears underneath her dress would clearly not have existed during the time period this movie is set. It’s equally disappointing to realize that the color of her dress, while gorgeous, would have been nearly impossible to replicate during Ancient Egyptian times.

Samuel L. Jackson in The Caveman’s Valentine

Samuel L. Jackson has an impressive film history, and he also has a reputation for avoiding nude scenes. The actor isn’t comfortable revealing himself fully on camera, but viewers caught a glimpse of his bare body during a scene in The Caveman’s Valentine. During this scene, Jackson’s character disrobes and struts past a mirror. The intention was likely to show off his backside, but viewers caught a solid glimpse of his bare frontside as well. Since this movie was never remastered, the scene in question isn’t of great quality, so Jackson’s dignity was at least partially preserved.

Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai

The Last Samurai performed decently at the box office when it was released, but this film received a decent amount of backlash, as well. The film depicted life in 19th-century Japan, but there was a serious lack of representation in the film that was impossible not to notice. There was also a big wardrobe issue. The armor worn by Tom Cruise’s character, Captain Nathan Algren, was meant to replicate that of a typical Japanese Samurai. However, the armor in this movie is more reminiscent of those worn by warriors in the 1600s, not the late 1800s. It’s a pretty big issue to miss!

Jennifer Love Hewitt in The Tuxedo

Jennifer Love Hewitt is known for her impressive variety of film roles. Much like Julia Roberts, Hewitt also doesn’t enjoy filming nude scenes and will turn down roles if they require her to get undressed. Her role in The Tuxedo shows Hewitt playing a genius scientist who is caught by a villain. The villain tries to drown her, and Hewitt thrashes about wildly as she’s dragged into a pool. Her performance was breathtaking in its realism, but it also caused her dress to slide around and reveals her bare chest to the audience. You can only see her chest for a second, but it’s pretty clear that it was an accidental slip.

Mel Gibson in Gallipoli

Mel Gibson was still an up-and-coming actor when he starred in the 1981 Australian war drama Gallipoli. The film follows Mel Gibson’s character along with other young men who enlist to fight during World War One. While it’s well-known this film took some creative liberties to portray the infamous Gallipoli campaign against the Ottoman empire, there is a scene that wasn’t supposed to reveal as much as it did! Gibson’s character stripped to swim with his fellow soldiers, and his manhood was completely exposed to the camera.

Tom Cruise in All the Right Moves

Tom Cruise, like most high-profile actors, has had his fair share of wardrobe malfunctions. One of his earliest roles took place in 1983 when he starred as a Serbian-American high school student. Cruise gave this sports drama his all and performed a totally nude during a sex scene with fellow star Lea Thompson, who played his on-screen girlfriend. The actor made a wrong move during this pivotal scene, causing his private parts to be completely exposed to the camera for a few seconds. This slip made it onto the big screen and bumped this film’s rating from R to X!

Louis C.K. in American Hustle

American Hustle received several Oscar nominations for its amazing cast and storyline, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. Comic Louis C.K. was one of the many prolific actors to star in this black comedy crime film. During a scene where an FBI agent is interrogating Louis’s character, viewers can clearly see a Rolex on his wrist. This film was set in the 1970s, and the Rolex didn’t come out until 2010! It’s a glaringly obvious error, but viewers and critics didn’t give the film too much grief for it.

Gabrielle Union in Bad Boys II

Gabrielle Union starred in the hit movie Bad Boys II as Special Agent Sydney Burnett. She plays the love interest to one of the main protagonists, so it’s no surprise her wardrobe consisted of tight and revealing outfits. However, one of her outfits was apparently too tight and revealed more than the actress expected. During an intense scene where Union’s character throws a gun into a live mine field and dives for cover, her top slides to the side and reveals her nipple. It’s only revealed for a moment, and it’s hard to notice unless you slow down the footage. Many fans noticed this, but it appears the editors didn’t because the slip made it onto the big screen!

Kate Winslet in Titantic

Kate Winslet’s role in the romance/disaster classic Titanic is still praised as one of the best examples of acting in this era. Titanic became a quick classic, despite fans creating memes about the door situation. This movie is still referenced and spoken about frequently in current film and media, which only gives credence to its memorability. However, there was a minor detail involving Winslet’s character that fans are surprised the editing team didn’t notice. Winslet’s character has a mole that wanders between the left and right sides of her face throughout the movie. You would think the creative team would have chosen a spot for the mole and stuck to it, but when you watch the film, you’ll notice the mole frequently shows up on different areas of her face!

Denzel Washington in Ricochet

The 1991 action crime thriller Ricochet stars big-name actors and received solid success when it was released. Washington played LAPD Detective-Lieutenant and ADA Nicholas “Nick” Styles, who spends the majority of his time with fellow law enforcement officers, both in the field and in the locker room. During a scene where Washington’s character leaps up while fully nude in the locker room to hide from a woman entering the man-only zone, his front is completely exposed to the camera. You can only see his manhood for a fraction of a second, but it’s been pointed out many times by fans.

Extra in Teen Wolf

The wardrobe malfunction we’re referring to here happened during the original 1985 film, not the adapted tv series or the new 2023 movie. An extra in the background of this scene was cheering for the basketball team when her fly went down, completely exposing her undies to the camera. The extra quickly recovered, but this movie is known for mishaps. During a different scene, an extra pulled his member out of his pants on purpose, and it made the final cut! Seriously, if you haven’t seen the 1985 Teen Wolf yet, you need to!

Earpiece in Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America is known as one of the best Marvel movies, and it created an amazing storyline that Chris Evans would follow throughout the entire franchise. This movie focused heavily on its attention to detail and attempts at realism despite it’s fantastical plot, but there was a serious slip-up in one scene. About an hour and a half into the film, you can clearly see this soldier wearing a state-of-the-art earpiece. There’s no way technology like this would have been used during World War II, which is when this scene is supposed to take place. It’s only a minor detail, but it can definitely pull you out of the scene if you notice it.

Female Cast in Julius Ceasar

The film Julius Ceasar is a film adaption of Shakespeare’s play based on the real-life story of betrayal and power struggle in ancient Rome. This 1953 epic film received critical acclaim for its attention to detail and realism, but there are a few elements that don’t line up with the time period. The most obvious example is the wardrobe of the female cast members. While their outfits line up with the time period, their undergarments do not. The female cast can be seen wearing bullet bras, which were iconic in the 1950s when this movie was filmed. However, they definitely didn’t exist back in ancient Rome!

Elizabeth Hurley in Bedazzled

Elizabeth Hurley starred as the Devil in the 2000 remake of the original Bedazzled movie. Her character is often seen wearing a body-hugging red dress and is the embodiment of all that is wicked as a sexy, strong, flirtatious type who easily manipulates the main male lead into giving up his soul. As Hurley is getting the main male lead to sign a contract in her office, she bends to sit, and her dress flares up, revealing something scandalous! Fans still debate over whether this slip revealed some cute underwear or bare skin, but either way, the moment obviously reveals something unintentional!

Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood

Daniel Day-Lewis starred in the hit 2008 film There Will Be Blood as Daniel Plainview. This movie is known for its dramatic performances and all-absorbing storyline, but there are a few moments that show historical inaccuracies. One of the most minor details is hardly ever seen, but it still needs to be said. Daniel’s character is often seen wearing boots, and fans have noticed these boots have a waffle sole design on the bottom. While this detail isn’t very obvious or noticeable, it’s still way outside of the time period’s fashion. That type of design wouldn’t have been invented yet during the film’s time period!

Ryan Gosling in La La Land

Ryan Gosling gave an incredible performance in La La Land. This film captures the feel of modern-day Los Angeles and provides the audience with a look into the lives of those who live in this famous city. However, there’s a pretty obvious wardrobe malfunction moment in the movie that we’re surprised the directors didn’t notice! At one point, Ryan’s character is seen wearing a retro-brown color shirt during an intense road rage scene. In the very next scene, his character arrives at his sister’s house wearing a blue top! Are fans supposed to think he keeps spare shirts in his car and randomly decides to change? It’s a pretty obvious mistake. After a moment, he sits at the piano and is again wearing a different shirt! What is happening here?

Tobey Maguire in Seabiscuit

Tobey Maguire played a gorgeous jockey in the movie Seabiscuit. The movie fared well with critics and fans, but many have pointed out the inconsistencies with the wardrobe. The biggest issue is the horse jockey fashion of the 1930s and 40s, which this movie didn’t represent accurately. The strapped helmet Maguire’s character wears throughout the movie would not have been worn by jockeys during this time period and is a pretty glaring issue within an otherwise close-to-perfect movie.

Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction thoroughly deserved its R rating for multiple instances of profanity and extreme violence. However, despite all that, there were very few instances of nudity in this 1994 crime saga. During a quiet moment when Bruce Willis’s character, Butch, hides out with his girlfriend, there’s an unexpected moment of nudity. Butch takes a shower and is barely covering himself with a towel when he comes out. There’s a moment where Butch doesn’t hold the towel high enough and exposes his manhood to the camera. Later on, when the film is aired on television, the towel is digitally stretched to cover him, but this moment remained intact when it premiered on the big screen.

Female Cast in Pearl Harbor

During this scene in Pearl Harbor, audiences see nurses stretched out on their luggage and wearing period dresses accurate of that time period. However, there’s one very obvious issue with this scene. Can you see it? To an untrained eye, there appears to be no issues with this scene, but people who understand that time period know that women displaying bare legs in public would be considered very scandalous back then. Women would have been wearing stockings or a suitable alternative during this time period.

Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Effect

Ashton Kutcher received rave reviews for his performance in The Butterfly Effect. This movie started a sensation about time travel that is still spoken about and explored to this day. Kutcher’s character discovers he can travel in time and fix his past mistakes but must deal with the consequences of his actions in the present day. During one scene in the movie, Kutcher wakes up in bed next to someone he doesn’t recognize. He quickly scrambles out of his bed, and the ill-fitting boxers worn by the actor accidentally reveal more of himself to the world than he intended. It’s a very quick moment, but noticeable if you slow down the footage.
